Vicar of Dibley fans welcome show back with open arms as it returns after 13 years

Vicar of Dibley fans have been beside themselves with anticipation for the one off return of Dawn French's Geraldine Granger since it was announced she would be part of the BBC's Big Night In.

Dawn portrayed her well-meaning but frustrated Reverend Geraldine Granger for 13 year between 1994 and 2007 - with the show making its comeback this evening, after another 13 years off the air.

Needless to say, fans couldn't have been more delighted with what they got this evening.

One gushed: "i love the vicar of dibley so much #TheBigNightIn."

Another tweeted: "Loving @Dawn_French back as #VicarOfDibley on #BigNightIn."

"Here she is," a third fawned, "The vicar of dibley, the fab @Dawn_French, don't you just love her. #TheBigNightIn."

During Dawn"s (Geraldine's) message, she urged unity, kindness, and proper precaution amid the lockdown.

With a dollop of nostalgia, she also relived some of Dibley's most hilarious moments - including dancing with Darcey Bussell, and having to eat four Christmas dinners because she was too polite to say no.

She rounded off her message poignantly with: "Praise the Lord, and praise the NHS. Bless you."

"Bless you, Dawn," said Davina as the show returned to the studios.

Dawn announced her involvement with The Big Night In on social media, penning: "I'm back in the dog collar, back in the vicarage, and back on your telly as part of The Big Night In.

"Be there, or go to hell. Literally, I have some sway."

The show has lost three original cast members since it went off air - Roger Lloyd-Pack died in 2014, and Emma Chambers and John Bluthal both died in 2018.
