Vicar knocked over in his own driveway after trying to stop thief taking his car

A vicar was knocked over while trying to stop a thief stealing his car.

The clergyman, who has not been named, discovered someone trying to take the silver Seat Terraco from his driveway in Penylan , Cardiff, at 10.30pm on Friday night, having just returned home from giving an evening sermon at his church.

When he looked out of the living room window he saw the car's lights were on and went outside to check.

The vicar then noticed a man was sitting in the driver's seat and he decided to stand behind the car to stop it from being taken.

The thief reversed the car, knocking the vicar out of the way.

Luckily, he was left with minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

South Wales Police officers investigating the incident want anybody with information to come forward.

They are trying to locate the stolen car – registration ending in OMR – which is believed to have been driven around Tremorfa and Splott in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Detective Constable Steve Jones, said: "This man and his family are in total shock and are extremely upset.

"He is lucky that he wasn't more seriously hurt when the vehicle reversed into him."

He added that he was  hoping someone would get in touch with vital information.

"I think it is likely to be an opportunist who did this, possibly somebody from the local area.

"Despite what the victim has been through, I hear he was already continuing with his duties the next day

"I really hope that we can deliver some good news in to him in time for Christmas.”

Anybody with information is urged to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or call 101 giving reference *467231.
