Vic to split health department in two

Victoria's Department of Health and Human Services will be split up in the wake of the state's coronavirus crisis.

It will involve the creation of the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.

The Department of Health will now focus on areas such as ambulances services, mental health and ageing, as well as health itself.

Martin Foley will remain the state's health minister, while Housing and Planning Minister Richard Wynne will take on the new portfolio.

The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing will cover areas including child protection, family violence, housing and disability.

It will also cover multicultural affairs, LGBTQI+ Equality, Veterans and the offices for women and youth, which currently come under the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

"The health response to the pandemic has been our highest priority in 2020. This new structure will mean a greater focus on our recovery, while we remain vigilant in our fight against coronavirus," Premier Daniel Andrews said.

Newly-appointed DHHS Secretary Euan Wallace will continue in that role at the slimmed-down health department, while Sandy Pitcher will be secretary at the new department.

She has been Deputy Secretary for contact tracing and outbreak management at the DHHS.
