Vic teacher suspended amid investigation

The Victorian teaching regulator has suspended a Melbourne teacher while it investigates potential misconduct.

The Victorian Institute of Teaching confirmed Sheikh Nasrallah Chaarani, a teacher at the Australian International Academy in Melbourne's north, was suspended on an interim basis.

The regulator could not share the reason for the suspension, but told AAP it suspends teachers when there is reasonable belief they pose an unacceptable risk of harm to children.

The interim suspension will prevent Chaarani from performing teaching duties or any child-related work for at least 30 days.

VIT will conduct an investigation into whether Chaarani engaged in misconduct, is unfit to be a registered teacher, or has an impairment that prevents him from being a teacher.

Chaarani has worked at the Australian International Academy for 27 years. He is also a Muslim marriage celebrant.

AAP has contacted Chaarani for comment.
