A Melbourne man is being urged to hand himself in to police as they investigate a death.

Homicide detectives have issued a public appeal as they search for 30-year-old Klay Holland.

A body found in Melton, west of Melbourne, on Wednesday has been identified as Shane Cox, 39.

Police say Holland, from Delahey, is a person of interest in the investigation and they have released a photo of him, adding he might have gone into hiding.

Holland is known to visit Melton and Delahey, as well as the Ararat and Stawell country areas.

He is described as Caucasian, average build, about 170cm tall, with short light brown hair and hazel eyes.

"We ... believe he may have gone to ground," Detective Inspector Tim Day said.

"Whilst it is understandable that some of Holland's friends and associates may wish to assist him, let me make this very clear - any person assisting Holland may render themselves liable as an accessory."

Mr Day said if anyone saw Holland, they should not approach him and call triple zero.
