Vic parliament to sit after advice change

Victoria's public health officials have approved parliament returning with COVID-safe controls. (AAP)

Victoria's parliament is set to resume sitting next week, despite COVID-19 cases surging past 200 a day in the state.

In a letter to Legislative Assembly Speaker and Labor MP Colin Brooks, seen by AAP, the state's public health officials have ticked off parliament returning with COVID-safe controls.

"Due to what is now projected to be a more prolonged lockdown due to the worsening epidemiology across metropolitan Melbourne, balanced against the essential work of the Victorian parliament, there is an adjustment in public health advice," COVID response division executive director Dr Evelyn Wong wrote.

It has been recommended both chambers don't sit at the same time, numbers are kept to a minimum, some MPs attend remotely, and hours are reserved for "essential business".

"The Victorian Department of Health trusts this will assist parliament to deliver its vital democracy function safely," says the letter, dated from Thursday.
