The mother of three boys murdered by their father when he ploughed into a dam in Victoria has died at the age of 50.

Cindy Gambino died on Tuesday after a medical episode at her home two days earlier her family, including husband Stephen Mounes, said in a statement.

Ms Gambino was a "warrior for justice" since losing her three sons Jai, 10, Tyler, 7, and Bailey, 2, when their father Robert Farquharson drove his car into a Winchelsea dam.

Farquharson was returning home from an access visit on Father's Day in 2005 when he drove his car off the Princes Highway. While he swam free, his sons drowned.

"Through unfathomable tragedy and suffering came new hope, with Cindy and Stephen going on to have two sons, Hezekiah and Isaiah," the family said.

"The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to all people and organisations who have stood by Cindy and the family throughout the many difficult years they had to endure."

Farquharson was found guilty of the boys' murder in 2007 before his conviction was quashed on appeal in December 2009.

He was again found guilty in 2010 and sentenced to life with a minimum of 33 years. A further two appeals by Farquharson were later rejected.
