A Victorian man has been jailed for stabbing another man in the neck and chest with a knife while he had him pinned against an oil drum.

Ali El Nasher, 31, on Friday faced the Victorian County Court, where he was jailed for at least two years and four months.

He had pleaded guilty to affray and intentionally causing serious injury stemming from a violent attack at a factory in Melbourne's north in February last year.

El Nasher and his friend - 25-year-old Richard Markhail, jailed for at least 12 months for affray and recklessly causing serious injury - spotted Ali Al Hamza, who was known to them, towing a friend's car to a Campbellfield mechanic.

The pair smashed their vehicle into some parked cars as they tried to run Mr Al Hamza over and then chased after him on foot into a nearby factory.

Markhail had a knife and swung it at the victim before handing it to El Nasher, who stabbed Mr Al Hamza in the chest, just above his heart, and the neck, while he was pinned against an oil drum.

Mr Al Hamza managed to escape, leaving a trail of blood, and was taken to hospital with a collapsed lung.

"This was a fast-moving attack ... and it was only a matter of luck it wasn't more serious," Judge Amanda Chambers said.

"Violence involving the use of a knife is far too prevalent."

El Nasher's defence lawyer, Christopher Farrington, previously told the court it was a chance meeting and not a planned attack.

He also said the 31-year-old had been addicted to cocaine for about nine years and would consume up to seven grams a day.

Markhail had also suffered years of addiction, the court was told.

Judge Chambers sentenced El Nasher, who has already served more than 12 months in pre-sentence detention, to a total of three years and nine months behind bars.

Markhail, who was sentenced to a total of 21 months in prison, must serve another six months before being eligible for parole.
