A Victorian man who raped his sleeping friend after sending her a series of late-night messages that received no response has been jailed for at least three years and 10 months.

The 29-year-old Phillip Island man, who cannot be named, raped the woman, then 25, at Cowes in March 2020.

He messaged her on SnapChat after she left a party they had both attended, asking "where you at".

The man then walked to the house the woman was staying at, which was unlocked, looking for a phone charger.

Another man also at the home asked what the 29-year-old was doing and walked him home.

"I'll come back when he is asleep," the 29-year-old then messaged the woman on SnapChat.

The man later returned to the house and raped the 25-year-old woman while she was asleep.

"What the f*** happened last night," he messaged her the next day.

"I am so sorry. I feel soooo bad today. I can barely remember last night and I have lost my f***ing keys. I want to die".

The 29-year-old later told police he had a "hazy" memory of the incident having drunk beer and spirits, as well as consuming cocaine.

"I was just zombie," he said.

The man on Tuesday faced the Victorian County Court, where he was sentenced to a total of six years and five months in prison, having earlier pleaded guilty to one count of rape.

He must serve at least three years and 10 months before being eligible for parole.

In a statement, the woman said she no longer trusts anyone, always feels unsafe, and suffers from anxiety after the rape.

"The hurt and damage you caused to this woman ... will likely stay with her for a long time," the judge told the 29-year-old man.

"It takes courage and integrity to lay bear the vulnerabilities she feels. I commend her for coming forward."
