Alleged Vic hit-run driver charged

A Melbourne driver is facing more than a dozen charges after allegedly hitting and killing a father of four and injuring another man earlier this week.

Timmy Rakei, 44, was working as a traffic controller in Carrum Downs on Tuesday morning when a Holden Commodore allegedly struck him. He died at the scene.

His 38-year-old workmate suffered severe leg injuries and was released from hospital on Thursday.

A three-day manhunt ensued after the driver allegedly fled the scene and was picked up by a Hyundai SUV nearby.

The driver, 30, was arrested at a property in Carrum Downs just after 2pm on Thursday.

On Friday afternoon, police said the driver was charged with 14 offences, including culpable driving causing death, negligently causing serious injury, dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident.

He will face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

A second Carrum Downs man, 25, who handed himself in to police, faced court on Friday after being charged with five offences including being an accessory to impeding an apprehension or prosecution.
