Vic Labor confirm replacement for late MP

The Victorian government's upper house replacement for late Labor MP Jane Garrett has been appointed after her death from cancer last month.

In a joint sitting of state parliament on Wednesday night, Labor operative Tom McIntosh was confirmed as the party's pick to fill the casual vacancy left by Ms Garrett.

Mr McIntosh, who has worked as an electrician and staffer to federal Labor MP Ged Kearney, will represent the Eastern Victoria region for at least the next three months until facing the polls in November.

His elevation comes after Ms Garrett's death from cancer in early July at age 49.

She entered Victorian parliament in 2010 as the member for Brunswick and was promoted to cabinet in 2014, before quitting as emergency services minister in 2016 over a controversial firefighters' union pay deal.

That same year, Ms Garrett was first diagnosed with breast cancer but entered remission before it returned last year.

The mother of three moved to the upper house in 2018 and had announced she would not recontest her seat at the upcoming state election.

A state memorial service for Ms Garrett will be held at Brunswick Town Hall on September 2.
