Vic Labor acting secretary to stay in role

The acting state secretary of Victorian Labor is set to permanently take on the role.

The party's interim governance committee on Friday endorsed Chris Ford for the position, which he had been filling while Clare Burns was on maternity leave.

Earlier this month Ms Burns resigned from the position, after she had delayed her return to work amid internal party debate.

She was the party's first female state secretary in some 40 years but had come under pressure, given she had been backed for the role by disgraced former powerbroker Adem Somyurek.

Mr Somyurek is currently subject to an investigation by the state's anti-corruption watchdog, the ombudsman and Victoria Police over allegations of branch stacking, which he denies.

The scandal prompted reform of the Victorian branch of the Labor Party, which included the expulsion of about 1800 members found to be "non-genuine" and the suspension of voting rights of all other members until 2023.

Mr Ford will have a busy year ahead of him, with both a state and federal election expected in 2022.
