Vic has 'more than enough' power reserves

Minister Lily D'Ambrosio says Victoria is 'more than lifting its weight' in energy supply. (AAP)

The energy market operator has assured the Victorian government the state has more than enough power in its reserves.

Victorians can be confident about supplies after the operator stepped in to direct electricity generators to supply power, Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio said on Friday.

"We need to just make sure that those reserves are actually channelled back into our system so that Victorians can continue to rely on that power," she told reporters.

Ms D'Ambrosio rejected the suggestion Victoria's gas supply has contributed significantly to the energy crisis, saying the state was more than lifting its weight when it came to gas and electricity supply.

More needs to be done to support businesses grappling with energy costs, she said, flagging her intention to raise the issue at next week's meeting of the nation's energy ministers.

"We know that rising energy costs are having an impact and ... we're absolutely sympathetic to the impact on businesses," Ms D'Ambrosio said.

Investment in renewable energy is the best way for Victoria to protect itself, she said.
