Vic governor to thank essential workers

A "thank you" event is being held for workers who carried Victoria through the bushfires and COVID. (AAP)

Essential and emergency workers who protected Victoria through bushfires and COVID-19 outbreaks will be officially thanked in a special event on Saturday.

Representatives of emergency services, charities, hospitals, COVID-19 testing centres, the Australian Defence Force and those contributing to food and supply chains will attend a concert and brunch hosted by Governor Linda Dessau.

The event in the lush grounds of Government House in central Melbourne is a show of gratitude to emergency services for protecting the community during the summer bushfires of 2019 and 2020, as well as essential workers who kept the community safe during lengthy lockdowns.

Attendees will be treated to a 45-minute performance organised by Arts Centre Melbourne, featuring artists Emma Donovan, Ali McGregor, Joel Ma, Silvie Paladino, Kane Alexander and Mark Jones.

A commissioned mural by street artist Heesco featuring frontline workers will be on display, to recognise them for their work.

"It was intended that the image serve as a reminder that those on the frontline are ordinary people who do extraordinary things, stepping up for others, when needed," a statement on the event read.

The mural will later be moved to a permanent home in the town of Yarram, in southeast Gippsland.
