Vibrations felt across Bristol and 'bomb sound' heard as lorry bursts into flames

Vibrations have been felt across Bristol and 'bomb sounds' heard as a lorry burst into flames on the M5.

Residents living in Lawrence Weston were woken by the loud noise at around 6:35am (February 2). Multiple people took to social media to discuss the 'explosion sound'.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene of the blaze between junction 17 A4018 ( Cribbs Causeway ) and junction 18 M49.

All traffic is currently being held as drivers face 40-minute delays.

Elena Gospodinova said: "I was just making my coffee at 6:30 and I heard three bomb sounds where I live. It was very loud and vibrating was felt after? My son get scared he heard too . He thought we are under attack . There is nothing visible around."

Another local said they heard about 'three massive bangs and sirens coming from Avonmouth', and someone else wrote that it sounded like 'explosions'.

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to multiple reports of a lorry on fire at 6.26am.

"The lorry is well alight. Six appliances were deployed to the scene from Avonmouth, Patchway, and Southmead.

"No casualties have been reported in the incident. The driver was out of the vehicle. The Avonmouth slip road is closed."

Crews are still dealing with the fire.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix says: "M5 Southbound blocked, stationary traffic due to lorry fire between J17 A4018 (Cribbs Causeway) and J18 M49. Cameras show the road has been blocked since 06:40 for emergency services to attend the fire."
