A 21-year-old woman who died in custody after a "medical episode" has been remembered by her family as loving and vibrant.

Wiradjuri woman Chelsea Bracken was on remand in Tasmania's Mary Hutchinson Women's Prison when she suffered the episode on Saturday, the prison service said.

She was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital and died on Monday.

The incident is being investigated by the coroner, as is due process with any death in custody.

"Our Chelsea will be remembered as a loving and vibrant individual," her family said in a statement.

"With her passing, we would like the space to mourn and grieve her passing. At this time we wish for respect, time and space."

The Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Service said it was providing support to her family and the broader Indigenous community.

"This is a tragedy. The loss of Chelsea - at only 21 - will profoundly impact her family, friends and the community," legal service chief executive Luke Smith.

"In Tasmania, Aboriginal people remain significantly over-represented in custody and are five times more likely to be in custody than non-Aboriginal people."

Ms Bracken was listed to appear before Launceston Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges including stealing, drug possession and breaching a community correction order.

The Tasmania Prison Service has said it is unable to comment further because of the coronial investigation.

"I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased woman at this difficult time," prison service director Narelle Pamplin said.
