'Vexed at Arsenal!' - Gunners fans respond to Emiliano Martinez masterclass at Copa America

Arsenal fans are infuriated after seeing ex-goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez single handedly saving Argentina from elimination in the Copa America.

Martinez, 28, was involved in a thrilling 1-1 draw in normal time between Argentina and Columbia in the semi-final of the South American tournament.

The game eventually ended up being settled on penalties, with the now Aston Villa goalkeeper producing three stunning saves to help his country win the shootout.

His heroics in these penalty kicks raised further questions from the Arsenal faithful on why he was sold last summer, despite impressing when deputising for current first choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Ironically, the German goalkeeper is now being linked with a move away this summer, which has incensed the fans over the decision to keep Leno over Martinez at the time.

The Argentinean goalkeeper spent a total of ten years in north London, only making 38 appearances in all competitions over that time.

Despite what looked like a renaissance for the 28-year-old's career at the end of the 2019/20 season due to Leno's injury, the decision was made to sell Martinez to Aston Villa for £20million in last summer's transfer window, as he sought more regular first team football.

Whoever made the decision to prioritise playing Leno as number one is still a talking point amongst the Gunners faithful, and last night's performance in the Copa America has pushed this to the front of the agenda once again.

Fans reactions to Emiliano Martinez' performance against Columbia (Danyal Khan)

Here are how a selection of disgruntled Arsenal fans reacted on Twitter to seeing their ex-goalkeeper produce a masterclass of a performance in the penalty shoot-out.

@johnkelly1980 asked: "Looking back who the hell sanctioned the sale of Emi Martinez from Arsenal ? They need firing."

@_nathes tweeted: "Real happy for Emi Martinez but more vexed at Arsenal for thinking Leno better than this man."

@afcsammmm stated: "Emi Martinez saved more pens yesterday than Leno has in his whole Arsenal career."

@gunnerblog said: "Something kind of superhuman is happening to Emi Martinez, and as much as it pains me from an Arsenal perspective I can’t help but be happy for him.

Martinez and the rest of the Argentina squad now have a chance to go on and win the whole tournament, when they face reigning champions Brazil on Sunday at 1am GMT.
