Socialites, celebrities and influencers decamped en masse across the Hudson River to attend the 12th annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic at Liberty State Park in New Jersey.
Guests arrived off ferries from lower Manhattan and were greeted with the perfect thirst quencher of Veuve Clicquot champagne, which has sponsored the event since 2008.
Ryan Jamaal Swain, from the TV show Pose, kicked off the festivities with a melodious rendition of the star spangled banner, and actress Julianne Moore was honored with the ceremonial ball toss to start the match. Jennifer Lawrence looked every inch the bride to be in a blush dress and engagement ring that sparkled just like the champagne. Nicky Hilton, bedecked in a polka dot Oscar de La Renta trench dress, held court in the VIP Tent, while models including Coco Rocha and Emily Ratajowski soaked up the atmosphere.
The all-day celebration is billed as one of the pre-eminent events of the summer social season, which means the fashion is always dialed up to 100. Think enormous hats, sunglasses and floral dresses aplenty, with men in sharp suits in pastel colors making the whole day feel a bit like a missing scene from The Great Gatsby.
Polo in the US is not as widely enjoyed or understood the way it is in the United Kingdom, where matches round out a key part of summer events for the social set, but the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic is doing it’s best to convince even jaded New Yorkers that maybe they should all enjoy the sport a little bit more. With Nacho Figueras and Delfina Blaquier around, most guests (including me) will certainly be back next year.
