‘Veterinary medicines’ found in milk sparks urgent supermarket recall

An urgent “do not consume” warning has been issued for a popular milk brand over fears it may be contaminated with penicillin.

Graham’s Family Dairy is recalling its semi-skimmed milk with an expiration date of 31 July 2026 due to a possible health risk. The alert applies to its one-litre, two-litre, and single-pint bottles sold in the UK.

Anyone who has bought one of these products has been told not to consume it and to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Food Standards Scotland states that the reason for the recall is the “presence of veterinary medicines”.

It added: “Antibiotics in the product may make it unsafe to consume and may be a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to antibiotics including penicillin.”

Based in Scotland, Graham's Family Dairy is the country’s largest independent dairy company, with products including milk, butter, yoghurts and ice cream. It supplies most of the big supermarket chains across the UK.

The business has apologised for the issue, and assured customers that no other products are affected.

In a statement, it said: “At Grahams Family Dairy we believe that the quality of our products and the safety of our consumers is paramount.

“This is a precautionary measure we have taken as there is a small risk a trace level of antibiotics may be present in the milk which could cause a reaction to consumers with an allergy to antibiotics.

“Due to this, we are asking our customers not to consume but to return the following products: Grahams Family Dairy one pint semi-skimmed milk with a use by date of 31 July, Grahams Family Dairy one litre semi-skimmed milk with a use by date of 31 July, Grahams Family Dairy two litre semi-skimmed milk with a use by date of 31 July.

“If you have purchased any of these products, please do not consume. Instead, please return the milk to the store purchased from for refund.

“We apologise for this issue and would like to reassure our customers no other Grahams Family Dairies products or use by dates are affected.”
