Veteran sports journalist John Clayton believes Titans QB Marcus Mariota will secure contract extension in 2019

A lot of question marks surround Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota as he enters the final year of his rookie deal.

It’s a pivotal season for him, and many have their doubts with recent injury history and the Titans’ inability to go from good to great as a whole lately.

In order to secure a contract extension, Mariota will need to prove he can not only stay healthy, but be an essential piece in making the Titans serious playoff contenders.

Veteran sports journalist John Clayton is among those that believe Mariota is up to the task.

“I think he is going to be fine and I think he is going to get the contract extension. I guess we have to define what make-or-break is. … They still need to get the most out of him,” Clayton said in a report by the team’s Jim Wyatt. “The way Derrick Henry came on late in the season, I think that helps. He needs better blocking from the offensive line but you know how smart he is, how talented he is. … I don’t know if they can break in and make the playoffs because, if they don’t make the playoffs, it is only because Houston and Indy have done better.”
