Veteran Mersey MP Frank Field to make announcement about political future

Veteran Merseyside Member of Parliament Frank Field has said he will make an announcement about his political future tomorrow.

The 77-year-old MP for Birkenhead will hold a special event at the town hall of his constituency at midday tomorrow, followed by a question and answer session.

Today Mr Field's office were tight-lipped on what the announcement would be.

As one of the longest-serving MPs in the House of Commons, there will be speculation that Mr Field could be leaving politics.

But others may wonder if he is joining a different party after he resigned the Labour whip last year citing issues of antisemitism and 'nastiness' in the party.

Universal Credit 'turning women to prostitution' claims Frank Field MP

Mr Field currently chairs the Work and Pensions Committee as an independent MP and regularly raises cases regarding Universal Credit and other benefits issues.

In his youth he was a member of the Conservative party but left over his opposition to apartheid in South Africa and joined Labour in 1964.

The ECHO will bring you news of the announcement and reaction as soon as we hear it tomorrow.
