Veteran goalkeeper re-signs four-month Cardiff City deal

Veteran goalkeeper Brian Murphy has put pen to paper on a four-month deal at Cardiff City, which will see him stay at the club until December 22.

Murphy, 36, who originally joined the club in 2016, had made 10 appearances during his three years as a Bluebird before his contract expired this summer.

He was released by the club, however, following their relegation from the Premier League.

But after news broke of the lengthy lay-off of Neil Etheridge, who sustained a grade three hamstring tear in the opening Championship fixture of the season against Wigan, Neil Warnock sought to bolster his goalkeeping stable.

The Irishman had played at Manchester City, Ipswich and QPR, among others, before joining moving to the Welsh capital club.

It is likely that Murphy will play understudy to both Alex Smithies and Joe Day, who signed this summer from Newport, while Etheridge remains sidelined.

Etheridge was the club's clear No. 1 at the beginning of the season, with Day chosen as his back-up. However, after Day shipped two goals against the Latics on the opening day, Warnock subsequently placed his faith in Smithies.

Smithies has since kept the gloves and has grown in confidence with each passing game. Murphy will now provide back-up should either Smithies or Day get injured before Etheridge's return.
