Veteran actor and comedian Johnny Beattie dies aged 93

Legendary Glasgow actor and comedian Johnny Beattie has died aged 93.

The veteran entertainer has been hailed as a "national treasure" as news broke he had passed away after a short stay at St Margaret's Hospice.

Born in Govan, Johnny cemented his status as a Scottish comedy giant both on stage and on screen in a career spanning six decades.

He starred in his own Saturday night sketch show in the 1960s, followed by memorable stints in Scottish shows Scotch & Wry, Taggart and Rab C Nesbitt.

The former shipyard worker had many hats as a stand-up comic, pantomime dame and host of game show Now You See It on STV.

He most recently played pensioner Malcolm Hamilton in BBC soap River City from its launch in 2002 until he retired due to problems with his health in 2015.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon led tributes to Johnny on Twitter, saying: "So sad to hear that Johnny Beattie has died. He was a hugely talented performer and a truly lovely man. The photo here was taken at the Govan Fair a few years ago - he had us in stitches.

"Today, we’ve lost a national treasure, and my thoughts are with his loved ones."

The Pavilion Theatre described Johnny as a "great friend to the theatre", adding: "He was a great man to sit and talk to about the legends of Scottish Theatre and there cannot be a theatre in Scotland that Johnny did not perform and star in.

"He was one of these performers that just went on stage and gave the audience what they wanted, a funny man and Scottish legend."

River City actress Leah Macrae said: "Getting to work with him on screen will forever be a career highlight of mine. I watched him in AWE. He was an exceptional talent but above all, a complete gentleman. Sending love to all of his family."

Johny leaves behind four children: Maureen, Louise, Paul and Mark.

He had been married to wife Kitty for more than 30 years, before they split. She died in the early 1990s.
