Vested groups trying to tarnish Tripura's image, says deputy CM

AGARTALA: Tripura deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma took strong exception to the incidents of violence in a few places of Maharashtra and observed that a vested quarter became active to tarnish the image of Tripura in a calculative manner.

"We are shocked to see the incidents in Maharashtra referring to some false incidents in Tripura. Hindus and Muslims have been living together for generations here. Using Tripura's name for violence is a direct attack on our glorious history. It has hurt our sentiments," Dev Varma told media on Sunday.

He reiterated that Tripura has traditionally been a place where people from different communities, religion and caste lived in peace and harmony. There was tension some localities of Tripura following the incident in Bangladesh during Durga Puja, but the situation normalised immediately with the active role of leaders of both communities.

A piece of fake news was circulated that a mosque in Kakraban under Gomati district in Tripura has been damaged, he said, adding, "The people of both the communities have been leading a peaceful life in the area and they became embarrassed to see the reference of their place on TV channels. The people protested such irresponsible reporting by so-called national media."

There is no reported case of damage and vandalism of any mosque in Tripura in the recent past. There is no report of simple or grievous injury or rape or death of any person in any incident as alleged in some social media posts, which has triggered violence in Maharashtra, Dev Varma said and asserted that Tripura police have been asked to take strong action against the people who had circulated such news.
