'Very sad news' as city on brink of losing its Liverpool World Heritage Status

People have expressed their anger after a recommendation has been made to strip Liverpool of its World Heritage Status

It comes after UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has recommended the city is deleted from the list of World Heritage sites.

If that decision is in line with the recommendation published today, Liverpool will lose a title it has held since 2004.

Publishing its recommendation today (Monday, June 21), the World Heritage Committee said: "Over the period since the inscription of the property on the List of World Heritage in Danger, the State Party has been provided with consistent advice through Committee Decisions, missions and technical reviews. The State Party has not complied with the advice and repeated requests of the World Heritage Committee."

Liverpool was granted World Heritage Status in 2004, placing it alongside world famous attractions like the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal.

But the city has found itself under threat of having the status removed for over a decade now.

That threat first arrived because of Peel Land and Property's £5bn Liverpool Waters development in the city's north docks.

More recently, the heritage body has expressed concerns about Everton's now approved plans for a new £500m stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

ECHO readers have taken to social media to express their views on the recommendation, with some saying it's 'very sad news'.

John Monton said: "Liverpool has been warned for 15 years to stop building monstrosities near the waterfront but chose not to listen."

Albertto Michael said: "Don't follow their advice to keep the status your gonna lose the status, not rocket science!!!"

Commenter Robbie183 said: "The city will loose a lot of funding as a result, very sad news."

While some people were concerned about the recommendation, others jumped to the defence of the city and said developing the waterfront was 'way more beneficial' to Liverpool than World Heritage Status.

Commenter Theothers said: "We do not need the status at all, look at all the big city’s around the world we have to move with the times and build a bigger and better Liverpool and more and more people will still come, I just feel we are being held back when we could do so much with this city."

Andosmate said: "Developing the docks and waterfront amongst others is way more beneficial for this city than WHS. I’m sure there’s lots more that will bring tourism, jobs and a vibrant economy."

Kensington1962 said: "If we used our brains and get big names behind this: Paul McCartney, Ringo, Prince Charles etc, we could turn this around."

Liverbirds said: "Who needs their recommendations Liverpool’s a great city anyway."
