'Very proud' - Liverpool coach responds to transfer question ahead of Porto return

Liverpool coach Vitor Matos has been asked about the club potentially signing players from Porto in the future.

The 33-year-old left the Portuguese club to join the Reds in October 2019 as elite development coach.

Matos holds an UEFA Elite Youth A License and has worked in a variety of youth roles at Porto including under-10, U12 and U14 level, U15s and U17s assistant coach positions plus opposition scouting for U19s and Porto B.

Prior to joining Liverpool, Matos worked as assistant coach at the Porto B team, and has been speaking to the media this week.

Liverpool take on Porto’s first team on Tuesday night in their second Champions League group stage encounter, in what will be the first time since Matos joined the club.

Matos has spoken about the feeling he felt when Liverpool were drawn against his former employers, and why he still holds a strong connection with the Portuguese club.

“It was amazing! I’m a Portista and I have a very strong emotional bond with the city and the club,” Matos told Portuguese news outlet Record, via Sport Witness.

“Not only because it was my childhood club, but also because I worked there for seven years and it had a big impact on me personally and professionally.

“I grew up watching FC Porto win and there are many people I admire and respect at the club.

“At the same time, the desire to win, to respect Liverpool’s enormous history, stood out.”

As well as previewing Tuesday’s game, Matos was also asked if Liverpool would be in the market for some of Porto’s biggest talents, including Diogo Costa, Joao Mario, Vitinha, Fabio Vieira and Francisco Conceicao.

“I won’t say,” said Matos.

“I’m just very proud because FC Porto are producing a lot of talent for the first team.

“And I also leave here a great compliment to the entire academy and to the staff of the first team, who trust and give the opportunity.”
