'Very nice man' found dead at Jaguar Land Rover site named by colleagues

A man found dead at the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) factory in Halewood has been named by colleagues.

The body of Mark Smyth, who was in his 50s, was found in a loading bay by horrified staff in the early hours of Saturday.

Mr Smyth was a night supervisor for DHL, who are contracted by Jaguar to provide logistics services at the Halewood site.

Mr Smyth, believed to be from the Ellesmere Port area, was described as a "very nice man" by his colleagues.

A statement from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm officers attended at the Jaguar plant in Halewood on Saturday morning following the discovery of a man's body.

"Police and paramedics attended shortly after 6am and recovered the body of a man thought to be his 50s.

"The man's next of kin have been informed and the death is not being treated as suspicious.

"A file is being prepared for the Coroner."

A statement from DHL said: "We can confirm that Merseyside Police responded to an incident at our Halewood operation on Saturday, following the death of a colleague.

"We offer our deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and are cooperating fully with the police in their investigation.

"While this is underway we are unable to comment further, other than to confirm that the safety and wellbeing of our colleagues is paramount to the company."

A spokesperson for JLR said: "We can confirm there was a serious incident at our Halewood site involving the death of an agency colleague.

"The incident is now being investigated by Merseyside Police.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the family of our colleague at this time.

"We will be working closely with DHL to ensure we provide full support to employees affected by the incident."

The circumstances of Mr Smyth's death will be examined by Knowsley, Sefton and St Helens Coroner's Office.
