'Very harsh' - Newcastle United fans react as former boss Chris Hughton is sacked by Brighton

Newcastle United fans reacted with sympathy at the 'harsh' sacking of Chris Hughton by Brighton on Monday morning.

After finishing 17th in the Premier League and narrowly avoiding relegation, the Seagulls waited less than 24 hours after their final game of the campaign to end Hughton's five year tenure at the club.

Hughton, who managed the Magpies to Championship title glory in 2010, is still fondly thought of by Newcastle supporters, and it's clear they have plenty of sympathy for the 60-year-old.

Many Newcastle United fans posted messages of encouragement and sympathy for Hughton on Twitter, with many describing the decision made by the South coast club as 'harsh'.

It could, of course, have a positive affect on Newcastle United next season though.

While Rafa Benitez hopes to stay providing the club show some more ambition, if that isn't the case then another season battling relegation on Tyneside would be expected.

And many Toon fans warned Brighton, 'be careful what you wish for', with regards to the decision to look elsewhere.

That is the risk Brighton have decided to now take.

After poor form in 2019, the Seagulls will begin their search for a more exciting manager who they hope will take them to the next level and move them away from constant relegation dog fights.

But the risk could be unsettling a dressing room and the decision could ultimately back fire if they fail to get Hughton's successor right.

Here's how Newcastle United fans reacted to the news.
