'Vertical drinking' explained as nightclub and pub rules in Scotland change next week

Next week will signal the so-called ‘ Freedom Day’ in Scotland, where almost all legal requirements around Covid-19 in pubs, nightclubs and restaurants are scrapped.

But that doesn’t mean the end of Covid rules - as Nicola Sturgeon said mask-wearing and taking contact details from customers would remain.

When the 'Beyond Level Zero' restrictions were announced earlier this week, there was confusion over whether punters could stand up while drinking or wear masks while dancing.

The phrase 'vertical drinking' has been thrown around this week to add to a long list of pandemic words we've learned over the past year.

It comes after Deputy First Minster John Swinney told Good Morning Scotland that pubgoers wouldn't be allowed to drink "vertically" - standing up by a bar rather than sitting at a table.

He also said masks would be a requirement while dancing in nightclubs – which is against World Health Organisation guidance.

Under lockdown rules over the past few months, people have not allowed to stand while eating and drinking in a pub, restaurant, bar or cafe.

In a dramatic U-turn, Scots will now be able to prop up at the bar while having a drink and will not be required to wear a face covering on the dance floor.

Scotland’s National Clinical Director Jason Leitch appeared to confirm that they will not be required on the dancefloor from next Monday.

The Scottish Government is gearing up to announce an update tomorrow which will say that coverings are no longer required in clubs.

Here is everything we know so far...

When will nightclubs reopen and what are the rules?

Nightclubs will reopen on Monday, August 9 on Scotland's so-called 'Freedom Day'.

Nightclubs and late night venues were forced to close in March 2020, meaning they will have been shut a total of 28 months or 507 days by Monday, August 9.

It looks like clubbers won't have to wear masks on the dance floor, according to Scotland’s National Clinical Director Jason Leitch.

Punters will also be able to stand up at the bar and drink thanks to the new updated rules.

Late night venues will still have to collect the contact details of customers, according to the Scottish Government.

Further details have yet to be released, including whether there will measures such as queuing systems.

In England, nightclubs are not be required by law to enforce social distancing, mask wearing or any obligatory use of Covid tests or vaccine passports for customers.

However, Boris Johnson announced that proof of full vaccination would be needed for entry into nightclubs and other venues with 'large crowds' by the end of September.

It is not known if the Scottish Government will take a similar approach.
