Versace apologises for mislabelling Hong Kong and Macao as countries on T-shirt

Fashion label Versace has issued an apology after mislabelling Hong Kong and Macao as countries on the back of one of its T-shirts.

The garment in question lists various cities across the world alongside their country

The Italian fashion house was criticised on social media platform Weibo by one of its ambassadors, Chinese actor Yang Mi, who announced she’d be terminating her contract with Versace as a result of the error.

Both Hong Kong and Macao are former European colonies, which Mi’s representatives pointed out in a statement on Weibo: “Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity are sacred, lawful, and brook no division,” it read.

Versace swiftly responded to the claims with a statement issued on Weibo from Donatella Versace herself, who is chief creative officer at her eponymous label.

“Never have I wanted to disrespect China’s National Sovereignty and this is why I wanted to personally apologise for such inaccuracy and for any distress that it might have caused,” the fashion designer said.

According to the brand, the T-shirt in question has been pulled from production and will no longer be sold.
