Manchester United's new £24m signing Juan Sebastian Veron arrived in Manchester this morning via a private jet from Gatwick airport - having flown from Buenos Aires in South America.
The former Lazio central midfielder was taken to his hotel by United officials and then immediately whisked off to a private hospital in Cheshire to undergo medical checks.
Veron will meet his new team mates at the squad's Carrington training ground, where he will complete more medical checks before signings are concluded.
His new boss Alex Ferguson will not be in Manchester to greet the Argentine superstar as he is receiving an honorary degree from Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland.
The Veron family have an existing history with Old Trafford. Veron's father scored against United while playing for Estudientes in the 1968 World Club Championship.
Looking forward to beginning his career with United, Veron, who speaks little English, said: "I want to be the next Veron to score in that great stadium and this time a Veron will score for Manchester United."
The Argentine international was playing in the infamous World Cup match of 1998 which saw his future midfield partner David Beckham red carded. He said: "My future is with Manchester United and that means playing with David Beckham."
An adaptable midfielder and, according to United legend Bobby Charlton, well suited to the English game, Veron will be given a couple of weeks to settle in.
His first match is likely to be on August 1 for Ryan Giggs' testimonial, missing the squads trip to the Middle East as he waits for his British work permit to arrive.
Alex Ferguson said: "Veron is a terrific player that's for sure. We needed that one player who will give everyone at the club a lift."
