Vernon Kay Scrambles to Backtrack After Embarrassing Slip About BBC Co-Star

Vernon Kay found himself in a bit of an awkward spot live on air after a cheeky blunder while chatting with his BBC Radio 2 co-star. The TV and radio presenter, who celebrates his 51st birthday today, hosts the daily mid-morning show where he spins classic tunes, chats with celeb guests, and shares a few stories of his own.

But during a recent broadcast, Vernon accidentally made things sound a bit more risqué than he meant to while joking around with his producer, Janice — real name Janine Maya-Smith, reported Manchester Evening News.

It all started innocently enough when Vernon asked Janice what her “unique selling point” was. She said it was her high energy, and Vernon agreed, joking she was like someone who “puts a torch on in a dark room.”

The pair kept the banter going until Vernon teasingly said: “Don’t make me tell the story about last night, Janice.” Laughing, he added: “Janice and I had a right good time, honestly. You know when you go on a school trip, and there’s always the two kids at the back who are always eating each other’s packed lunches and getting into all sorts of trouble… that was me and Janice last night.” Janice agreed it had been “really good fun.”

But after a quick break, the two suddenly realised how their comments might have sounded to listeners. Vernon jumped back on the mic, mid-conversation, to set the record straight: “Did it sound like that? Did it sound like we were having rudie dudie? No, stop it, pack it in. I know the red light’s on, we’re live, Janice! You’re a lady, clear your thoughts.”

It’s not the first time Vernon’s quick wit has landed him in a spot of bother live on air. Not long ago, he had another slip while chatting with travel reporter Bobbie Pryor about traffic updates. Bobbie warned drivers not to get “too close,” and Vernon couldn’t help but quip: “You don’t get too close to your partner that often,” sending Bobbie into fits of giggles. She playfully told him, “Don’t bring it up at work.” Vernon was quick to clarify he didn’t mean himself, just speaking “in general.”

This week, Vernon also welcomed actor and musician John Simm onto the show, where the two bonded over their love of music, sharing some top tracks from legends like Elvis and Whitney Houston.
