Vera star quits after eight years on ITV drama as they share emotional statement

Vera star Kenny Doughty has quit the show after eight years.

The actor - who plays DS Aiden Healy - had sparked concern amongst fans when he posted some photos from the set recently and said "thanks for the memories", with fans convinced this was his way of bidding goodbye after eight series in the role.

Devastated viewers took to social media to quiz Kenny about his future on the much-loved ITV drama, but before now, he had never confirmed his future on the show. In a sweet message, Kenny confirmed he would be handing his DS badge back in.

Paying a sweet tribute to his co-star and "inspiration" Brenda Blethyn, he thanked his co-star for their eight years together on set.

In a statement, Kenny shared: "After 8 years & 35 Vera films I’ve made the difficult decision of handing over DS Healy’s badge.

"I can confirm I am leaving Vera. I want to thank everyone who’s made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew BUT of course my buddy & inspiration Brenda Blethyn. The perfect leading star who I owe so much to. I feel lucky to have you as a friend, you make me howl with laughter & have been a rock for me over the years. I can’t thank you enough. Precious times."

He also had a sweet message for fans, thanking them for their support, as he added: "And finally the Vera fans: without you and your support I would never have made so many films.

"You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty & love for the show."

Fans of the show rushed to social media to pay tribute to the actor.

"Thank you for the amazing stories that you have been apart of on screen! Vera has been my comfort TV show for a number of years now and your character has been a massive part of that. It's been a joy watching yourself and Aiden Healy grow. Can't wait to see what your future roles Include! (The next episode will certainly be an emotional one)," one penned.

A second added: "It’s not going to be the same ~ you and Vera have that perfect chemistry together. No Malcolm and now no you ! But Good Luck," as a third penned: "Oh no ...... you can't leave Vera who's going to look after her - totally gutted."

"What a fabulous journey and experience you've had. I've enjoyed watching you from start to finish. You never disappoint Kenny. Well done love," a third shared, with a fourth writing: "Thank you for all of the great work! Watching "Vera" is a treasure for me. She looks and acts just like my late mother. Her facial expressions and her phrases are her spot-on. The way your character is with her - putting on her booties, bringing her food, etc. is so endearing. The first time you called her "Mum" I just cried. It's been so wonderful watch."
