Vera star Kenny Doughty pens message to fans after ratings success of new series

Vera star Kenny Doughty has called fans of the ITV drama 'the best in the world' after the ratings success of the new series.

After fans waited over a year to see DCI Stanhope back in sleuthing action, the much loved show made a return to screens over August Bank Holiday weekend for its 11th series.

The first episode of the new run - Witness - went out on Sunday, August and saw Brenda Blethyn 's title character try to get to the bottom of a grisly murder after a local businessman's body was found at the foot of Tynemouth's Collingwood Monument.

There were plenty of twists and turns over the course of the two hour episode, resulting in a edge of the seat worthy climax - which we won't divulge the results of in case you haven't watched it yet!

The Vera action switched from the coast to Northumberland National Park for episode 2 - Recovery - which was centered on the discovery of a woman's body in remote woodland.

Earlier this week, ITV were pleased to announce that the first episode pulled in 7 million viewers - very impressive for a Sunday night.

And, sharing in the success star of the show, Kenny, who plays Vera's sidekick Aiden Healy took time to thank fans for their continued support.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "Best fans in the world! And if you haven’t seen new series catch up on @itvhub "

In response, one of his followers wrote: "A big thanks to all of you involved for getting Vera back on our screens , it can't have been easy for you with all the restrictions in place."

Another wrote: "Superb programmes, it's always great to have Vera and the team back - but an extra special congratulations for making them in the middle of all the chaos. Lot of hard work I'm certain for everyone and it's appreciated."

Due to production on series 11 of Vera being significantly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, only two episodes went out this year, with the remaining four following in 2022.
