Vera's ITV slot set to be 'taken' by another show as fans demand assurances on drama's future

Vera's usual Sunday night slot looks set to be taken by another drama, as immediate replacement Endeavour comes to an end next week. And the schedule move comes as Vera fans are demanding answers on the show's future, following a cryptic post from Kenny Doughty.

It was a fortnight ago that Vera viewers got their last slice of series 12 action, when DCI Stanhope was caught up in a violent storm and some serious drama, as she found a baby abandoned in a car and had to confront her own past, after ending up back at her own family home.

There was scary moment for fans as The Darkest Evening cut to an ad break, just as Vera fell to the floor as a gun shot was heard. Thankfully, she was alright but there is now some off-screen suspense as fans wait for answers on whether there will be a 13th series of their favourite detective show.

And the concern surrounding its future was sparked by none other than Kenny, who has been playing Vera's sidekick DS Aiden Healy since 2015. He took to Instagram on Thursday to share photos of him and several Vera co-stars. Kenny captioned the post: 'Thank you for the memories,' and it was that statement that left fans worried that either he had quit his role as Aiden or the show was no more.

While ITV told ChronicleLive they had 'no news at present' and there is definitely one more episode of Vera to come, with The Rising Tide filmed before Christmas, one thing that looks certain is that Vera's 8pm Sunday night slot will soon be occupied by Grace.

The John Simm drama debuted in 2021 and returned for more episodes last year. And its return was confirmed in an advert that aired during Sunday's Dancing on Ice semi-final.

It looks likely that the new series Grace will start in a few weeks time, as Endeavour's finale will be on next Sunday, March 12.

But, while it wasn't even on on Sunday it was Vera that was still a hot topic on Twitter, as one worried fan tweeted: "Please, ITV, don't end Vera. We want another season. So many of us love this show and all of the characters, but especially Vera herself. When you, Ms Blethyn, et al. decide to bring the series to an end, please let us know in advance and give Vera a proper ending."
