Vera Pauw admits Ireland's Euro 2022 hopes are over after Ukraine defeat

Vera Pauw admits Ireland’s Euro qualifications ambitions are over after they came unstuck in Ukraine.

Áine O'Gorman’s 25 minute own-goal made the difference on a night captain Katie McCabe wasted the chance of equalising from the penalty spot.

Missing out on a point means missing out on a Euro play-off unless a pair of shock results in the campaign run-in go their way.

Ireland must deliver the biggest result in their history by defeating Germany at Tallaght on December 1.

If Ukraine are held to an unlikely draw on Tuesday by Greece, a point against the eight-time champions will suffice.

Germany’s six successive wins have already sealed their qualification and Pauw expects them to complete the campaign with an unblemished record.

“We feel that we have given it away here,” the veteran Dutch coach said about the consequences of Ireland’s slip-up.

“Greece can only take the points off Ukraine if they have the very, very best day and Ukraine has one like us that the ball just doesn't want to go in.

“Normally Ukraine will beat Greece on Tuesday and then Montenegro in their final game.

“For us, we need to sit down and make a game plan for the last match against Germany.

“We will do everything we can to get a win but we all know how strong a team Germany are.”

Ireland couldn’t recapture the cutting edge they displayed in the 3-2 win over the Ukrainians at Tallaght Stadium 12 months.

“To lose in the manner we did is gutting,” admitted Rianna Jarrett, a scorer in the first meeting of the nations.

“We should have taken one of the chances created but Ukraine killed the game in the second half by playacting to waste time.

“We felt that we needed to get something from this game but nine times out of 10 that own-goal doesn’t go in the net.”
