Dame Vera Lynn dies aged 103 and family pay tribute to We'll Meet Again singer

Wartime icon and the singer of one of the most famous songs of all time, Dame Vera Lynn, has died at the age of 103, her family has confirmed.

Vera, who was the Forces' sweetheart during World War Two, is best known for the anthemic We'll Meet Again, which was recently back in the charts, both as the original solo version and a re-worked duet alongside Katherine Jenkins in aid of the NHS.

Confirming her death, a statement from her family read: "The family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain's best-loved entertainers at the age of 103.

"Dame Vera Lynn, who lived in Ditchling, East Sussex, passed away earlier today, 18 June 2020, surrounded by her close family."

Celebrities and fans have been quick to pay tribute to Dame Vera. Actress and comedian Kate Robbins tweeted: "Have a lovely long rest now Dame Vera Lynn. You deserve it," and singer and Songs of Praise singer Aled Jones reacted: "Sending all my love to the family of Dame Vera Lynn who has sadly passed away - it was such an honour to duet with her - a true legend!"

Piers Morgan was also quick to pay tribute, posting: "Oh no.... what terribly sad news.Dame Vera Lynn has died, aged 103. A magnificent woman who rallied our country when we most needed it. The Forces sweetheart.The Nation's sweetheart. RIP."
