Vera filming is spotted in Whitley Bay as work on the new series approaches its end

Cast and crew of Vera have been spotted at work in Whitley Bay as filming for the 10th series approaches its end.

And they certainly in luck with the weather as the coastal shoot coincided with one of the sunniest days of autumn to date.

Our photographer snapped the team in action on Thursday  in the seaside town - which has made regular appearances in the popular ITV 1 drama - with cameras and production team this time setting up in and around Victorian Avenue.

While we didn't spot its star Brenda Blethyn, who plays the crime-cracking Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, the low-profile shoot still caught the attention of one or two curious passers-by.

One excited viewer, Lisa Fox, took to Twitter to say: "The sun has got its hat on for Brenda Blethyn in Whitley Bay filming Vera.

"Love living at the coast especially when we get to see this in action. Can't wait for the new series."

Work on the series is believed to be almost complete, having begun in the region at the very end of April.

Three days after the launch, Blethyn was seen filming scenes in Gateshead and since then the lengthy filming process has taken cast and crew to locations covering the length and breadth of the North East.

While the drama is Northumberland-based, filming over the years has explored new locations across Newcastle and Tyneside and also ventured into Teesside.

Whitley Bay  is the home town of Vera creator Ann Cleeves who wrote the series of Vera Stanhope novels the long-running TV series is based upon.

And Whitley Bay was also given a starring role in her most recent addition to the series: The Seagull, which begins with skeletons discovered near St Mary's Island.

The award-winning author writes a new Vera book every other year so it seems there will be no shortage of stories to inspire the on-screen crime drama which continues to be a ratings hit for ITV 1.

Vera is also watched around the world and its famous use of stunning Northumberland locations has created what has been dubbed "the Vera effect", in attracting hordes of tourists to the region, eager to see the area for themselves.

Cleeves, who also wrote the books which inspired the Shetland TV series, has now created a whole new crime-fighting hero.

New book, The Long Call , is the first in a planned Two Rivers series and features a detective called Matthew Venn.

Already its screen rights option has been taken up by Silverprint Pictures, producers of both Vera and Shetland.
