Venmo's newest feature erases the awkwardness of split checks

Paying the bill for a group dinner is generally a hassle many people can relate to.

One person takes the check to massive amount on their credit card, fully expecting the rest of the party to send their payments back soon. But sometimes it gets hard to track who pays what and how much to pay — especially when you have to add tax and tip — or other times you leave the restaurant and it just goes over someone's head to send you that Venmo payment.

But Venmo is now releasing a feature that could ease some of that burden.

Venmo is launching a feature called Venmo Groups which allows users to track and split expenses. Members of the group can add an expense and indicate who in the group needs to pay and the app will be the one to split the costs.

The feature therefore makes it easier to settle payments for groups that go out consistently or to multiple places in a day as it can provide running totals for the group. Members can also choose to settle their payments at anytime.

Groups can have up to 30 members, making it possible for bigger social groups like school clubs or sports teams to incorporate, while also going as small as helping a pair of best friends or a couple track their running totals.

But while the feature will help ease the expense counting, it probably doesn't change the split bill etiquette as users will still have to decide who pays what. And as we've seen go viral in the past, it's possible not everyone in the group splits the bill the same way.
