Authorities warned vendors to show price tags on products or they face fines during the Chinese New Year period.

Whichai Phochanakij, director-general of the Internal Trade Department, said officials had been sent to inspect prices of food and products at major markets in Bangkok.

Inspected areas included Chinatown on Yaowarat Road, Talad Ying Charoen in Don Muang, Phran Nok Market, Min Buri Market and Tao Poon Market.

The inspections looked into price tagging on products, weighing scales and possible hoarding during the festival, Mr Whichai said.

It was found that overall, prices of food and products have not gone up and are similar to those during last year's festival. Mr Whichai warned vendors who failed to show price tags on products could be fined up to 10,000 baht.

The Chinese New Year festival covers three days, starting today.
