Vendors to be compensated in €5 million package as Dublin's iconic Victorian fruit and vegetable market set to close

Vendors in Dublin's Victorian fruit and vegetable market are set to be compensated in a package worth around €5 million.

The iconic market between Capel Street and Smithfield will close its doors tomorrow, Friday 23 August.

Plans will see the historic building re-developed over the next two years into a new commercial space similar to locations such as the English Market in Cork or Belfast's St George's Market.

The historic Victorian building, which is currently owned by Dublin City Council, was opened in 1892.

RTE reported yesterday that final agreement is believed to be worth €5 million, but individual settlements vary depending on turnover and square footage.

Dublin City Council confirmed to Dublin Live that the closure of the market will go ahead tomorrow, but that the amounts paid to the vendors was "confidential and commercially sensitive".

A Dublin City Council spokeswoman said: "Whilst agreements have been reached with the remaining wholesale traders at the Wholesale Fruit & Vegetable market for the surrender of their interest in the area occupied by them, the legal formalities have not as yet been fully completed.

"The details of the amounts to be paid to them for the surrender of their interest is confidential and commercially sensitive.

"However, the entire market building will be vacated by close of business on Friday, 23 August."

Currently there are eight traders still working at the market.

Dublin City Council hopes to issue a tender to a private operator for the management of the revamped space.
