Velma confirmed as lesbian character in new Trick or Treat Scooby Doo movie

Velma has officially been confirmed as a lesbian in the upcoming Trick or Treat Scooby Doo movie.

Following Amazon Prime’s release of the newest film of the iconic childhood franchise on Tuesday, a clip of Velma’s first encounter with her crush, villain Coco Diablo, has gone viral. Viewers see Velma googly-eyed and speechless after laying eyes on the character, confirming the long-term idea that she was a lesbian.

This doesn't come as a complete surprise to fans of the franchise as James Gunn, the writer of the early 2000s live-action Scooby-Doo movies, confirmed he originally wrote Velma as a lesbian before having to change it. Gunn shared a tweet in 2020 saying that he had “tried” to make Velma a visible lesbian in the live-action movies, “but the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel)”.

Gunn wrote both the live-action film and its 2004 sequel, which both starred Linda Cardellini as Velma. In the second film, actor Seth Green played her boyfriend, and any implications that the character was gay were removed.

Tony Cervone, former supervising producer on the Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated series, previously confirmed Velma’s sexual identity, but said they were never able to officially show it onscreen. In an Instagram post during 2020’s Pride month, Cervone wrote: “I’ve said this before, but Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi.

"She’s gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why.

“There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc, it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention.”

After years of fans assuming Velma's sexuality, people were delighted to finally have confirmation on the matter as they took to social media to praise the film. One wrote: "I'm glad #Velma from #ScoobyDoo is officially a #lesbian now I know she is an established character but come on... it feels just right. She always looked as she'd need a #girlfriend "

Another penned: "“OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY,” while a third said: "Thank god we got back to things that matter In This country. Like Velma being a lesbian"

"VELMA'S A LESBIAN!!!! FINALLY SOME GOOD EFFING FOOD!!!!!," wrote another happy fan. Meanwhile a fifth posted: "Velma's always been a lesbian, this isn't new. It is, however, super cute."
