Veligonda to figure in KRMB notification

AMARAVATI: Union Jal Shakti Ministry has agreed to include Veligonda project as part of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) notification, said sources.

The project, designed to tap surplus water from Srisailam project, is nearing completion. The project was mentioned in the list of irrigation projects of the Krishna Basin in AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.

The Veligonda project is considered a lifeline for the drought-prone regions of Prakasam, Nellore and Kadapa districts.

The state government has secured all permissions, including environment clearances for the project, almost a decade ago.

However, the non-inclusion of Veligonda project in the KRMB gazette notification issued by the Centre has shocked the state government. While welcoming the fixation of the jurisdiction of the river boards of Krishna and Godavari, the state government rushed representations to the Centre seeking amendment to the notification.

C Narayana Reddy, engineer-in-chief, water resources department,, told the members that they have approached the Centre for amendment of the notification.
