Andhra Pradesh Velama Samkshema Sangham president Govinda Rao on Sunday urged the State government to include the community in the BC-A category as the existing BC-D was not helping youngsters get reservation in educational institutions and jobs as too many castes were brought under the BC-D list.
He told the media here that over 90% of the community people were living below the poverty line and their socioeconomic conditions needed to be taken into consideration for inclusion of the community in the BC-A list.
“The government should also allocate funds for the Velama corporation and start Velama Nestam financial assistance scheme to promote self-employment. The community should also be given priority in political posts in accordance with its population in North Andhra and other parts of the State,” said Mr. Govinda Rao.
The association leaders including Pediredla Satyam, Ittamsetti, Ammaji and Reddi Durga Prasanna said that they would meet Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and Ministers to explain the backwardness of the community.
