The vehicle fire was on the road linking from the M62.

A motorway camera image issued by Highways England showed thick plumes of smoke and a number of stationary cars, along with emergency vehicles at the scene.

Drivers were warned tonight to expect delays and avoid the area affected if possible.

National Highways tweeted: "2 lanes are closed on the #M6 north #J21a

" #Croftinterchange due to a vehicle fire on the road linking from the #M62 in both directions. Traffic Officers are on scene and Fire en route. Please avoid the area."

Travel service Inrix said: "Two lanes closed due to car fire on M6 Northbound from J21A M62 J10 (Croft Interchange) to J22 A49 Winwick Link Road (Newton Le Willows).

"Lane one and two (of three) are closed."
