Vehicle depot turned into temporary mortuary with capacity for 240 bodies

A vehicle depot in Bristol has been turned into a temporary mortuary able to accommodate up to 240 bodies as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The mortuary, which has taken over a vehicle depot in Bedminster, Bristol, was completed on Easter Monday only six days after construction began.

The six chilled containers at the site, covered by a large gazebo, can hold up to 240 bodies – increasing the capacity in the city by almost two-thirds.

The mortuary will be solely devoted to people who have died after contracting Covid-19 while hospitals have increased their general capacity for patients who have died over the last few weeks.

Bristol has so far seen a total of 85 deaths recorded by the University Hospitals NHS Trust and the North Bristol NHS Trust since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Restrictions will be in place to protect staff based at the Sandy Park mortuary, who will be offered continued emotional support.

Bristol City Council has written to neighbours around the site to keep them informed.

The mortuary was finished on the day the UK death toll of people who had tested positive for coronavirus passed the 11,000 mark.
