5 injured —2 seriously— in crash near CTA bus stop in Calumet Heights

Five people were injured after a crash sent a vehicle into a bus stop near 87th Street and Jeffery Boulevard on June 13, 2019.

A multi-vehicle crash Thursday in South Side Calumet Heights sent five people to local hospitals.

About 6:25 a.m., a vehicle eastbound on 87th Street crashed into another vehicle as it was trying to turn right onto 87th Street from Jeffery Boulevard, according to Chicago police. The impact sent one of the vehicles flying into a nearby bus stop, where it struck four pedestrians.

Five people were hospitalized as a result of the collision, including two people who were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in serious-to-critical condition, the Chicago Fire Department said. Two more were taken to Trinity Hospital in fair-to-serious condition and one was taken to Jackson Park Hospital in good-to-fair condition.

A third vehicle was involved in the crash, according to the fire department, but its role was not immediately known. Police initially said that a CTA bus was hit, but that claim was later deemed to be unfounded.

No. 15 Jeffery Boulevard local buses and No. J14 Jeffery Boulevard Jump buses are being temporarily rerouted in both directions near 87th and Jeffery Boulevard, according to the Chicago Transit Authority.
