Police investigating the disappearance of Brunswick woman Maryam Hamka have released an image of a car they believe could be linked to the case.

Ms Hamka, 36, was last seen on April 10 as she was leaving a Woolworths store on Albert Street, Brunswick at 5:30pm.

Ms Hamka told her family she was going to visit a friend in Brighton.

She left her home in Barkly Street, Brunswick with a bag of clothes and was picked up by a male companion. Police are still trying to confirm who that was.

Ms Hamka was not reported missing by her family for five days after she was last seen.

Investigators are trying to track the movements of a red 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback with distinctive damage to the front left guard.

Police believe the vehicle made a number of trips to and from the Brighton area and was being driven by a sole male occupant.

Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper from the Missing Persons Squad said investigators hope the image will jog someone's memory.

"I understand that this is a fairly common car, but I'm hopeful there will be people who remember seeing one with this type of front damage or one very distinctly being driven by a male driver with no passengers," he said.

"At this stage, we're not able to limit too much the areas the car has travelled to, so we're appealing to the general public to check their CCTV and dash cam footage for a vehicle matching this description.

Ms Hamka is described as 165 centimetres tall, with a thin build, long black hair and an olive complexion. She was last seen wearing a black dress.

Police arrested a 45-year-old Brighton man on April 16 after executing a search warrant at a property in Brighton.

The man, who is understood to be a former partner of Ms Hamka, was charged with offences unrelated to her disappearance and remains in custody.
