After weeks of speculation, Greggs has finally announced the launch of its vegan steak bake, which is available in some stores from today.
The bakery chain’s latest plant-based offering is intended to mimic a classic steak bake and is made using 96 layers of puff pastry, diced onions, a gravy filling and Quorn pieces instead of meat.
Greggs has said the vegan steak bake has been in development for months, with the company recruiting a panel of vegan and non-vegan taste testers to work on getting the flavour right.
The baked good costs £1.55 and will initially be rolled out across 1,300 shops from 2 January before expanding to a further 700 shops on 16 January.
Greggs has launched a vegan steak bake finder to help fans track down the closest store to them.
The company has been teasing its fans about the vegan steak bake for weeks on social media, recently releasing a short video with the tagline: "Believe the hype…Greggs x Vegan…dropping January 2020.”
Meanwhile, last week a label for a vegan steak bake was spotted in a Greggs store.
The launch of the vegan steak bake follows Gregg’s wildly successful vegan sausage roll, which was unveiled in January last year.
At the time, news that Greggs would be releasing a vegan sausage roll prompted both excitement and outrage, with Piers Morgan among its most famous critics.
Commenting on the vegan steak bake, Roger Whiteside, chief executive of Greggs, said: “Our vegan sausage roll launch was a huge success and we’ve been working tirelessly to expand our vegan friendly offering and provide more delicious savoury food-on-the-go options for people looking to reduce their meat intake.”
