Vegan restaurant Koocha to replace former Bristol pizzeria Flour & Ash

New life is set to be breathed into the building formerly home to one of Bristol's best-loved pizzerias.

Flour & Ash on Cheltenham Road closed in July with its owner, Steve Gale, revealing the financial impact caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The award-winning restaurant's closure caused widespread sadness and shock - but thankfully the site will not stay vacant for long.

The keys to the building have been picked up by the owners of Koocha, one of the most popular vegan restaurants in Bristol.

Earlier this month the plant-based mezze bar closed its Zetland Road restaurant, which opened in 2018, and moved to a temporary home on Gloucester Road in place of former vegan restaurant Suncraft.

The team behind Koocha will now get to work on transforming 203B Cheltenham Road, which will become their new permanent home.

"The outside space on Zetland Road was great but space inside was really limited which was a real struggle," said Koocha owner Noda Marvani.

"Although the Flour & Ash site has pretty much the same number of covers inside, it has far more space upstairs which will allow us to have a bigger kitchen and give us more flexibitilty.

"Since we launched in 2018 we've learned that our concept of vegan mezze plates works so this is a really exciting opportunity for us to take things up a notch."

With a bigger kitchen, Koocha's chefs will be able to create more dishes to add to the restaurant's popular menu.

The brown facade of the restaurant will also change, with Koocha enlisting the services of local artist Alex Lucas to adorn the building with a colourful mural.

Noda also hopes to create an outside seating area in the licensed garden at the rear of the restaurant.

If all goes to plan, the restaurant will be open by January so it can take part in Veganuary.

"We want to keep that intimate Koocha feel but also need more space to operate in, so the move is perfect for us," added Noda.

We're really excited about it and hope to be ready by January."

Koocha will continue operating from its temporary home on Gloucester Road until the new restaurant is finished.
